From April, hydrogen can be refuelled at the NXT filling station at Diamantweg 32 on the De Boekelermeer industrial estate in Alkmaar.
This makes it the first hydrogen filling station in North Holland above the North Sea Canal. Customers are already there. Stadswerk072, the waste collector of the municipality of Alkmaar, and GP Groot collection will immediately start driving zero-emission hydrogen trucks for the collection of waste in the Alkmaar region when the hydrogen station opens.
Lorem Last summer, the owner of the station, GP Groot fuels and oil trade, signed a cooperation agreement with the Municipality of Alkmaar, Stadswerk072 and GP Groot collection. Pieter Talsma, director of GP Groot fuels and oil trade: “The expansion with hydrogen is an important next step within the NXT concept. This Tank formula focuses on promoting the availability of sustainable fuels, such as LNG, CO2 and HVO. The hydrogen filling station is suitable for filling at high and low pressure, allowing both passenger cars (700 bar) and trucks and buses (350 bar) to fill up with hydrogen. This makes driving on hydrogen possible in our region.”
Driving on hydrogen has the major advantage that the vehicle does not emit any air-polluting emissions or greenhouse gases. The only residual product is water vapour. The range of a hydrogen vehicle is also greater than that of a battery-electric vehicle. Refuelling takes just a few minutes. Talsma: "Driving on hydrogen is therefore a promising solution for applications where the range of a battery-electric vehicle is not sufficient. We are pleased that Stadswerk072 and our colleagues from GP Groot are joining us in the collection, because supply without demand is not economically viable. In order to expand demand in the long term, we are in talks with several regional car dealers who offer hydrogen cars. They benefit from a hydrogen sales point in the region."
On behalf of the municipality of Alkmaar, aldermen Elly Konijn-Vermaas (Energy) and Robert te Beest (Execution Stadswerk072) signed the cooperation agreement. Konijn: "The Boekelermeer is developing into an Energy Innovation Park with which we as a municipality facilitate companies that provide innovation in traditional, green and new energy. Offering hydrogen therefore fits perfectly at this location and with the ambition of our municipality."
"Stadswerk072 is happy to join this development," Te Beest adds, "by starting with the use of a hydrogen truck for waste collection. A great first step towards an even cleaner municipality. Moreover, it is great that Alkmaar is a pioneer and is the first municipality above the North Sea Canal to have access to hydrogen as a fuel."
Both the vehicles and the tank installation are of Dutch manufacture. The trucks are supplied by the company Hyzon from Groningen and the tank installation by the company Resato from Assen. The realisation of the filling station and the purchase of vehicles falls under the direction of Duwaal. This is a collaboration of various regional companies that jointly and simultaneously organise the supply and demand of hydrogen in the northwest of the Netherlands. Many parties have now joined this initiative and work is underway to roll out various sub-projects, such as in this case the NXT hydrogen filling station for the North Holland North region. This project is being carried out under the DKTI-Transport scheme of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
