Dops RT and SCW Systems contribute to groundbreaking project for industrial sustainability

Two companies from North Holland North, Dops RT and SCW Systems, play a prominent role in the national HyCARB project, which receives a total of €45.7 million for research into sustainable chemistry based on green hydrogen, green electricity, and captured CO₂. The project is led by the research institute TNO and was made possible by the National Growth Fund program GroenvermogenNL and science financier NWO.

Sustainable chemistry for a climate-neutral future

The chemical industry is responsible for a significant portion of global CO₂ emissions due to its intensive use of fossil fuels like oil and natural gas. HyCARB aims to change this by developing new technologies to produce fuels and materials from industrial waste gases and CO₂, powered by sustainably generated hydrogen and electricity.

"With this project, we're working on the future of the industry," says Martijn de Graaff, project leader of HyCARB. "We're developing competitive and sustainable processes that should give the Netherlands a global leading position in circular carbon and hydrogen technology."

Contribution North Holland North

The contribution of Dops Recycling Technologies (RT), based in Alkmaar, is a key player in process innovation. The company develops unique reactors and technology for the controlled mixing of gases and liquids under extremely high temperatures and pressures. This enables the efficient conversion of waste streams and contributes to the scalability of new sustainable processes. 

SCW Systems, also from Alkmaar, focuses on the efficient removal and permanent storage of CO₂, which enables so-called negative emissions be achieved. By permanently removing CO₂ from the atmosphere, the company makes a direct contribution to slowing climate change. Within HyCARB, SCW Systems contributes its expertise in supercritical gasification and CO₂ removal.

Intensive cooperation

The award is the result of the call Hydrogen and green electrons for carbon-based chemistry, which is part of GroenvermogenNL. NWO and the National Growth Fund are jointly providing €35.3 million; the consortium is contributing an additional €10.3 million, bringing the total investment to €45.7 million.

HyCARB is the result of intensive collaboration between nine universities, five universities of applied sciences, three research institutes, and more than thirty companies. The focus is on the development of integrated hydrogenation processes, CO₂ electrolyzers, electrified high-temperature reactors, and advanced analytical instrumentation.

Not only is work being done on technology, but also on training the next generation of experts, so that the Netherlands remains a leader in sustainable chemistry in the long term.
