Hydrogen can be produced both 'green' and 'blue' with very low emissions.
There are different methods to produce hydrogen. To distinguish the methods used, we use color designations, such as 'gray', 'blue' and 'green'. Green hydrogen is usually seen as the most desirable category for the climate. However, indirect greenhouse gas emissions can also be released in this category.
Hydrogen can be produced both 'green' and 'blue' with very low emissions.
New Energy Coalition used scientific literature to investigate which factors influence the emission impact of hydrogen production. This shows, among other things, that the production of blue hydrogen based on natural gas has a comparable climate impact as the production of green hydrogen with offshore wind. This is, however, subject to the application of the correct CO2 capture technology.
