Alkmaar will become the first so-called 'Renewable Energy Valley' of the REFORMERS project and will serve as an example for valley areas to be developed throughout Europe.
The official launch of the REFORMERS innovation project (Regional Ecosystems FOR Multiple Energy Resilient Systems) in November marked the start of a major international programme focusing on local production and consumption of renewable energy by industrial estates in relation to local residents.
The first Renewable Energy Valley is located between Alkmaar and Heiloo and consists of the Boekelermeer business park, bordered on the north by a densely populated residential area, a residential area on the west, a light industrial area in Heiloo and an agricultural area on the east. At the end of the project, the area will be self-sufficient in the production and consumption of its own energy needs by means of renewable energy.
The energy hub to be developed near Alkmaar is based on the natural gas infrastructure present here, a bio-energy plant and the ideal location of the Energy Innovation Park Alkmaar as a breeding ground for innovations in the field of green molecules (gases). The REFORMERS project has a duration of 5 years and a size of 50 million euros. The coordination of the Alkmaar 'Flagship Valley' is in the hands of New Energy Colalition.
