Rinus Peekstok, Dailycool: “If necessary, we can also organize a hydrogen filling facility together with local entrepreneurs”

Date: 12-09-2023

Rinus Peekstok is one of the introductory speakers during the first edition of H2 Knowledge Café, on Thursday 21 September. Zero emission transport

Dailycool has been working on minimizing CO2 emissions for quite some time. For example, the transport company from Warmenhuizen has been driving trucks that run on HV100 or Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, also known as 'renewable diesel', for more than twenty years. According to director Rinus Peekstok, a nice first step to substantially reduce emissions without having to do much. But not a long-term solution.

“In order to be able to operate with truly low emissions, we will eventually have to switch to hydrogen. Because in our view, electric does not offer a solution either.”

The transition to zero emission transport is one of the major challenges for the transport sector. Where are we and what is needed to realize this ambition?

"We are only at the beginning. The ambitions are great, but so are the challenges. The government is still not providing enough clarity about where we really want to go. As a sector, we need clear legislation and rules. Take the issue of fuel excise duty, we are still not getting clear answers.

“In addition, the major truck manufacturers are not ready for it yet. A hydrogen-electric truck currently requires an investment of more than five times higher than a conventional diesel truck. This price difference cannot be earned back in the current market. In order to be able to market hydrogen in the transport sector at a competitive price, a lot of further development is still needed.”

Is hydrogen already a realistic option for supplying shops and logistics centres?

“Yes, but also an option that has its pitfalls. To be completely certain, we should actually wait another three years before getting on board. However, I don’t think that is the right attitude. We want to contribute to the energy transition. By focusing on hydrogen production, local cooperation and a chain-oriented approach, we will hopefully succeed in getting hydrogen-electric trucks on the road before those three years are up.”

A good hydrogen network is essential to make hydrogen in heavy road transport successful. Is this sufficiently available?

"Currently still very limited, but there are developments in the right direction. Take the NXT Mobility petrol station in Alkmaar. Avia Marees also wants to play a role in this new market.

“The availability of a hydrogen network in an area is of course highly dependent on the demand for hydrogen. As a transport company, we certainly want to contribute to this ourselves. If necessary, we can also organize a hydrogen filling facility together with local entrepreneurs.”

Want to join the discussion about supply and demand?

Then come to the H2 Knowledge Café 'Supply and Demand in Balance', Thursday 21 September from 5 to 7 pm.

The H2 Knowledge Café is a new initiative from the WaterstofNHN community. The intention is that we organize small-scale meetings every two months where members share and pass on knowledge and experiences in a relaxed atmosphere. Get in touch with other members of the WaterstofNHN community. Talk to each other, exchange ideas and come up with concrete solutions and initiatives together!

In this first episode of the H2 Knowledge Café, we will jointly search for concrete solutions to balance the supply and demand of hydrogen in North Holland North.

What can you expect this afternoon?
– Informative presentations from practice
– Plenty of room for dialogue

Registering for this meeting is super fast and easy for members of the WaterstofNHN community. Log in and select the option 'H2 Kenniscafé: supply and demand in balance' under the Events tab. Click on 'Register' and you're done!
