Gasunie report HyWay 27

Hydrogen is needed to realize the Dutch ambition for a sustainable and climate-neutral economy. In addition to sufficient production capacity for hydrogen, the development of a hydrogen economy strongly depends on the availability of a network for distribution. Gasunie has been asked to start developing this national hydrogen network. With this decision, one of the recommendations in the HyWay 27 report has been followed up.

HyWay27 shows that it is technically possible to use the national natural gas network for the realization of a national hydrogen network and that this is socially and economically desirable. However, the report also shows that more is needed to successfully make the transition, including in the areas of coordination, regulation and financing.

Conclusions in the report are that:

  • A hydrogen transport system is needed to efficiently connect users and suppliers with each other and storage in a climate-neutral economy.
  • Transport capacity within and between regions is already needed by 2030.
  • That part of the existing national natural gas network can be released and made technically suitable for interregional transport of hydrogen.
  • It is desirable to reuse the existing natural gas network for this purpose because this is cheaper than constructing a new infrastructure.
