Energy Greenery Alkmaar (EGA)

DOPS Recycling Technologies and green digester Sustenso want to set up a biomethanol factory and a power plant for green energy on the Boekelermeer industrial estate in Alkmaar. The installation must run on residual flows from industry.

Biomethanol

DOPS (recovering raw materials from waste) and Sustenso (biomass fermentation) are both part of the Investa network of green enterprises. Both have found each other in a new initiative: an advanced factory that will produce sustainable methanol and high-quality carbon from organic waste streams.

The new plant to be built uses DOPS thermolysis technology, which makes it possible to convert biobased waste, such as waste wood, dried sludge, plastics and digestate (residual product from Sustenso's digesters) into hydrogen, carbon monoxide and solid carbon. Hydrogen and carbon monoxide can easily be converted into biomethanol.

Off-grid energy hub

In a presentation during H2 knowledge café (13 February 2025), Michel Spits (DOPS) and Hans van der Weide (Sustenso) talked about their plans. The factory that will operate under the name Energy Greenery Alkmaar will be located near Investa. Construction is scheduled to start in 2027, after which production can begin from 2028-29. Because there is no electrolysis in the production process and therefore no electricity is needed, EGA expects to be able to produce at very low prices. The target is a sales price of 2 euros per kg.

In addition, investments are being made in electricity production, whereby energy goes off-grid via an energy hub directly to local consumers. This prevents grid congestion, a growing problem in the Netherlands where the electricity grid is overloaded due to the increase in sustainable energy generation.
