REFORMERS is a large-scale international programme in which renewable energy is locally produced and consumed by and for industrial estates and local residents. Alkmaar is the first 'Renewable Energy Valley' in this project and will serve as an example for valley areas to be developed throughout Europe.
This first Renewable Energy Valley (REV) in Europe concerns a demarcated area between Alkmaar and Heiloo. This Flagship Valley consists of the Boekelermeer business park, bordered on the north by a densely populated residential area, a residential area on the west, a light industrial area in Heiloo and an agricultural area on the east. The aim is to make this area self-sufficient in the production and consumption of its own energy needs by means of renewable energy at the end of the project.
The basis of the energy hub to be developed is the presence of an existing natural gas infrastructure, a bio-energy plant and the Energy Innovation Park Alkmaar as a breeding ground for innovations in the field of green molecules (gases). Also the innovative Hynoca Facility for the production of green hydrogen is part of Reformers. In addition, the Flagship Valley in the project will:
With the knowledge gained within the Flagship Valley in Alkmaar, the following 'valleys' will apply the successful results for creating sustainable energy, on the way to many self-sufficient Renewable Energy Valleys in the future.
