Hydrogen network Netherlands

Den Helder will have a direct connection to the national main network for hydrogen. This main network (formerly H2 Backbone) will connect large-scale hydrogen production, import terminals and companies at home and abroad.

Hydrogen network Netherlands

Hynetwork / Gasunie is developing a connected network that will connect production, storage and consumption of hydrogen (industrial clusters) in our country with our neighbouring countries. The plan provides for a branch to Den Helder – as a location for large-scale production of decarbonized hydrogen (H2 Gateway) and future landing port for green hydrogen. Due to its location on a shallow sea that is extremely suitable for installing wind turbines and the existing infrastructure for transport and storage, we can make ambitious efforts to achieve CO2-free hydrogen: from large-scale production, transport at home and abroad to storage.

The development of the national hydrogen infrastructure is happening step by step, starting in the industrial regions. With the backbone, all industrial regions will have access to hydrogen infrastructure and we will make the Netherlands the hydrogen port of Europe. In 2023, Hynetwork will start building the national hydrogen network. For the industry, clarity about the planning and availability of the hydrogen network is crucial. Before the summer of this year, it became clear that the rollout plan that Hynetwork used had to be updated. This was necessary, among other things, because of the developments surrounding the Delta Rhine Corridor and the longer lead times in the project procedures.

The final piece of the puzzle was put in place in December 2024. This provided clarity about the intended delivery date of the crucial west-east connection of the hydrogen network. Market parties and other stakeholders can submit their views until the end of January. respond on this rollout plan. After this consultation phase, we will submit the rollout plan with processed responses for decision-making to the Minister for Climate and Green Growth.

Status

Construction of the national network has started. As soon as H2Gateway enters the FEED phase, a connection will be made with Hynetwork. This will probably not be necessary until after 2030.
