Hydrogen factory H2Gateway

Large-scale production of competitive blue hydrogen as a transition fuel for industry.

H2 Gateway

H2Gateway aims to produce 0.2 Mton/year of blue hydrogen. The aim is to provide large industrial clusters with a significant portion of the expected demand for hydrogen. Den Helder is an interesting location in the blue hydrogen value chain due to the presence of an existing gas infrastructure and the proximity of CO2 storage capacity in the North Sea.

Central production of blue hydrogen that can be supplied at competitive prices and with high security of supply contributes to a significant acceleration of the industrial transition from natural gas to hydrogen and helps the Netherlands achieve the climate targets for 2030. Switching steel production to hydrogen requires 0.4 megatons of hydrogen per year. H2 Gateway (together with NortH2) can supply this hydrogen. Because blue hydrogen can be competitive with grey hydrogen well before 2030, part of the industry can already decarbonise in the short term.
