Hydrogen is becoming a serious alternative

Trucks and (delivery) cars that run on hydrogen are clean, have a large range and do not require long charging sessions or problems with the power grid. The government is therefore investing €125 million to help entrepreneurs make the switch to hydrogen. This is expected to result in forty new hydrogen filling stations and up to several thousand hydrogen vehicles. This will make hydrogen a serious alternative for entrepreneurs who want to move forward cleanly, in addition to electric driving on a battery.

Transport companies can receive up to 80% in subsidy when purchasing hydrogen-powered trucks, while hydrogen filling stations can receive a maximum of 40% in subsidy. Although the government focuses on businesses, the hydrogen filling stations must also be suitable for passenger cars. The filling stations must also be publicly accessible. The subsidy scheme must start in March 2024 and run until 2028. With the scheme, the government hopes that a nationwide hydrogen filling station network will be created.

European objectives

The government is acting in line with the European objectives. Europe requires that hydrogen filling stations be found along all European main motorways by 2030. For our country, there must be at least 30, spread across the entire country. Europe sets requirements for these stations, for example in terms of size, capacity and accessibility. There are currently 17 hydrogen filling stations in the Netherlands, four of which meet the European requirements that apply in 2030.

The subsidy scheme went into internet consultation in September (via the link below). Entrepreneurs can apply for the subsidy from March 2024. Each application must include at least one petrol station.
