In addition to hydrogen, biogas is an essential part of the energy transition. Biodigester Sustenso is an important player here. This spring, Sustenso sold the biogas plant to energy giant Engie. But that does not mean that the founders are now resting on their laurels.

From biogas to superfood

It all started 8 years ago with a meeting between Hans van der Weide and Prof. Dr. Joost Teixeira de Mattos. Together they brought the idea to life to use the excess CO2 from biogas production for algae cultivation. Willem Bas joined the team and together they worked hard on the realization of a biogas plant, which was located at Investa in Alkmaar. Today, the produced biogas is pumped directly into the gas grid, enough to supply a large residential area with gas.

Algae cultivation is not just a side issue for Sustenso. With a demonstration installation, they have already proven that a direct link between CO2 capture and algae cultivation is not only possible, but also very effective. The next step? A large-scale factory that makes optimal use of sunlight in a specially designed greenhouse. This progressive approach promises to have a significant impact on sustainable food production.

In the video they show what they are working on and talk about their green plans.
