Reformers energy project wins international hydrogen prize

Local production and use of renewable energy

The development of a complete, integrated hydrogen value chain, including the application of innovative technologies that enable continuous production – independent of the supply of solar and wind – led to the international award.

Reformers is a large-scale, long-term international innovation programme that focuses on local production and consumption of renewable energy by and for industrial estates and their residents. Project partners from all over Europe are working together to realise Europe's first Renewable Energy Valley Alkmaar. Complete hydrogen value chain

Renewable Energy Valley (REV) Alkmaar is a demarcated area in Alkmaar and Heiloo and consists of the Boekelermeer business park, bordered by residential areas, a small industrial area and agricultural land. This REV integrates sustainable energy carriers such as electricity, heat, green gas and hydrogen. Among other things, a complete hydrogen value chain is being realised - from production and storage to distribution and end use.

Companies, governments, knowledge institutions and residents in this area have been working on the self-sufficient energy infrastructure in which sustainable energy is generated, stored and exchanged since 2023. The application of sustainable hydrogen plays a central role in this. At the end of the project period, the area will be self-sufficient in its energy needs with locally produced renewable energy in 2028.
